Stewards of Children
What is this Project?
Prevent Child Abuse Delaware and its partners spearheaded the Stewards of Children™ project. This project represents the joint venture of many groups working throughout the state to create safer communities for our children. The goal of this project is to reach the “tipping point”, as described in the work of Malcolm Gladwell, by educating approximately 35,000 adults in Delaware so that they have the tools and knowledge they need to keep children safe.
The Partners Involved in the Project:
Catholic Diocese of Wilmington
Children’s Advocacy Center of Delaware
Delaware Division of Substance Abuse & Mental Health
Delaware Office of Women’s Health
Delaware State University
Department of Justice
Division of Family Services
Latin American Community Center
Office of the Child Advocate
Parents as Teachers
The YMCA of Delaware
All three counties have designated implementation teams. These groups meet monthly to provide oversight of the project in that county. The groups are responsible for identifying facilitators, audiences or host organizations and promoting the initiative in that county.
There are 13 authorized facilitators involved in this project. We will have between 40 – 60 facilitators providing the program throughout the State. To become an authorized facilitator contact Kellie Turner at 302-425-7490 or via email at Kellieturner@pcadelaware.org
What is Stewards of Children?
Stewards of Children is a prevention training program that teaches adults how to prevent, recognize and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. The program is designed for organizations that serve youth and for individuals concerned about the safety of children. It is the only nationally distributed, evidence-based program proven to increase knowledge, improve attitudes, and change child protective behaviors.
What are the features of this program?
A three-part DVD presentation integrating commentary from sexual abuse survivors, experts in the field and other concerned adults all providing practical guidance for preventing and responding to sexual abuse.
An interactive workbook designed to facilitate discussion, reinforce key concepts, and serve as a resource guide and personal action plan for resolving child sexual abuse.
A Facilitator-led discussion about important issues in sexual abuse prevention and the relevance of these issues within the community and organizations that serve children.
